The name says it all: the handheld meal game is strong at Sammich, which operates a food truck and the original location in Ashland as well as the Portland outpost. Owner and head chef Melissa McMillan takes pride in brining, smoking and boiling beef brisket in-house for the famous Pastrami Zombie, which features mountains of juicy, tender meat piled high on two slices of rye bread.

The richness of the pastrami is offset by a crunchy layer of coleslaw, a slathering of mayonnaise and the nutty tang of Swiss cheese. If you’re not in the mood for this unique flavor explosion, try the Chicago Italian Beef sandwich, made from thinly-sliced house-roasted beef packed into a toasted freshly-toasted baguette and topped with giardiniera and seared sweet peppers.

Sammich also offers its take on the classic Cuban sandwich with the Cubbie Cubano, featuring layers of black forest ham, smoked bacon, Swiss cheese, giardiniera, pickles, mayo and mustard on sourdough, which is then grilled to melty perfection. And on rainy, cold days, the shop’s classic grilled cheese on sourdough paired with creamy tomato soup is guaranteed to make you feel warm all over.

Lardo has come a long way from its early days as a single food truck, expanding to two booming brick-and-mortar shops as well as locations in Lake Oswego, Oregon and Las Vegas. The menu is a mouthwatering amalgam of Asian, Italian and American influences, though Lardo may be best known for its Korean Pork Shoulder Sandwich: juicy strips of pork accented with fiery house-made kimchi, chili mayo, cilantro and a spritz of lime, all tucked into a soft ciabatta roll.

The Pork Meatball Banh Mi is another filling favorite, with pickled vegetables, sriracha mayo and cucumber slices adding crunch to the tender meatballs. The Italian tuna melt incorporates olive tapenade, fennel and caper mayo for an unexpected twist on this deli classic, while the Nashville Hot Fried Chicken brings the spice with a crispy breaded chicken breast topped with hot honey, bacon, pickles and the southern staple known as Duke’s mayonnaise.

Like its main offerings, Lardo’s side choices run the global gamut, including potato chips, kimchi, hush puppies, macaroni salad with pineapple and ham and “Dirty Fries” topped with pork scraps, marinated peppers, fried herbs and parmesan. If you have any room left, satisfy your sweet tooth with a giant chocolate chip cookie.

This cheerful food truck has developed something of a cult following in the City of Roses, thanks in large part due to its enormous fried chicken sandwiches piled high with mouthwatering toppings. In the classic version, tender chicken thighs are fried to crispy, golden flawlessness and nestled on soft white buns, then topped with shredded lettuce, pickles and tangy Jojo sauce. For an extra kick, diners can level up to the spicy chicken sandwich, which incorporates pepper relish, bacon, Crystal honey and Alabama white mustard sauce.

Diners seeking red meat can’t go wrong with one of Jojo’s juicy burgers, made with a house-ground blend of chuck and brisket and topped with American cheese, white onion, shredded iceberg lettuce, pickles and Jojo sauce. Spice things up with Tillamook cheddar, caramelized onion, sambal mayo and pepper relish or treat yourself to bacon for an additional $2.

For the vegetarian set, Jojo departs from the tired veggie burger, offering the creative fried Brussels sprout melt, with snappy green sprouts tossed in Crystal honey and piled on gourmet Shokupan bread with coleslaw, American and cheddar cheeses, Alabama white mustard sauce and chives.

Be sure to save some room for the cart’s eponymous dish: Jojos are hand-cut, double-fried potato wedges tossed in a house spice blend and kosher salt and served with your choice of sauces, which include Jojo sauce, house ranch, sambal mayo, Alabama white mustard, Crystal hot sauce, Crystal honey, sweet chili sauce, BBQ sauce or ketchup. Make them “loaded Jojos” with the addition of cheese, onions and bacon.

This beloved Mexican sandwich shop warns customers that wait times might stretch 20 to 40 minutes during the peak lunch rush, but these savory delicacies are well worth the dwell time. Don’t miss the Carnitas Torta, with melt-in-your-mouth pork, avocado, fresh onion, cilantro, lime, cabbage, pickled onion and chili lime mayo piled high on slightly sweet toasted telera bread. For an added indulgence, you can add creamy cotija cheese or a fried egg.

If you’re up for the challenge, consider the Hamburguesa, Güero’s homage to the Mexican street burger. This formidable tower consists of two Painted Hills smash patties, avocado, American cheese, pickled jalapeños, grilled onions and chiles, ham, queso botanero, iceberg lettuce and chipotle mayo, held tenuously together by a fluffy sesame seed bun.

To wash it all down, Güero offers a selection of beers, cocktails and bottles of wine as well as several flavors of fruity Jarritos soda, Topo Chico, Mexican Coca-Cola and horchata.

Though best known for its high-end dinner menu and butcher shop, Laurelhurst Market offers a small but mighty menu of sandwiches and salads for lunch daily. The memorable LM Burger features house-ground beef, grilled onions, fancy greens, white cheddar, zucchini pickles and “secret” sauce, while the LM Steak Melt marries tender beef strips with spicy mayo, sauteed peppers and onions and melty provolone cheese on a French roll.

Ask for a few extra napkins with the #3, which piles freshly-sliced ham and salami, provolone, red onions, pepperoncini, shredded iceberg lettuce, spicy mayo and oil and vinegar on an Xuyen Bakery French roll. All sandwiches are available in half or whole servings, and most are available as a half-sandwich special with soup or a side salad.

As you might expect, Steakadelphia’s menu is almost wholly devoted to variations of the quintessential Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Start with the basic Philly Cheesesteak, with thinly-shaved beef smothered in white American cheese, mayo, onions and Steakadelphia sauce.

Massive appetites might steer toward the Steakadelphia supreme, which can be made with steak, chicken or a combination of the two and is topped with white American cheese, mayo, onions, lettuce, tomato, peppers, jalapeños, mushrooms and Steakadelphia sauce.

Change it up by swapping in cheddar, provolone, pepper jack or cream cheese, or go old-school classic with the salty, creamy tang of Cheez Whiz. Side options are basic, but well-executed: fries, cheese fries, and chocolate, strawberry and vanilla milkshakes.

Since opening the doors of its original Portland location in 2006, Best Baguette has set the standard for banh mi excellence in the region. A staple of Vietnamese cuisine, these sub-style sandwiches typically combine the fresh flavors of pickled carrots and daikon, jalapeno slices and cilantro with various meats and sauces. For first-timers to the shop, we recommend the Best Baguette Special, which layers freshly-baked French baguette with pate, ham, head cheese and Southeast Asian deli-style pork slices. The crispness of the veggies contrasts perfectly with the tender meat and cheese, and a slathering of house mayo and a sprinkle of soy sauce tie everything together.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider sampling the Shredded Pork with Pork Skin sandwich, stuffed with a blend of julienned pork and pork skin sweetened with house-made fish sauce. For a meatless option, the Asian Vegetable baguette combines fried tofu, carrots, taro, onions and vermicelli noodles on a crusty loaf. If you prefer a softer sandwich, Best Baguette also prepares a wide array of sandwiches on cloudlike croissants.

In addition to sandwiches, salads and soups, the shop features a full menu of boba teas, with more than a dozen flavors like strawberry, watermelon, taro, avocado, durian and mung bean.

This charming gourmet market and café features a half-dozen sandwich options (plus a few aimed at kids), but the quality and creativity more than makes up for the limited selection. Carnivores should be sure to try the slow-smoked brisket with BBQ sauce, cilantro slaw and coriander dressing on a potato bun; vegetarian alternatives include the pesto grilled cheese with tart apple, almond basil pesto, Swiss and arugula on toasty ciabatta and the fried polenta sandwich spiced with hatch chiles, pickled red onion, arugula and mayo.

Fried polenta fingers paired with two house sauces are also offered as a side dish, along with deviled eggs, mac and cheese, fried zucchini, cornbread, field peas, a deli salad of the day and cabbage and cilantro coleslaw in coriander vinaigrette and cornbread.

This deli-meets-dive-bar boasts an eclectic mix of hearty sandwiches and burgers as well as fried chicken, salad, soup, fries, tots and desserts. It’s hard to make a bad choice from this mouthwatering menu, which includes the Bunk Cubano with ham, Mojo pork shoulder, Swiss, mustard and pickles on pressed white bread; the delightfully messy Meatball Parmigiano loaded with house-made marinara and gooey mozzarella; a BLT piled high with crispy bacon strips, iceberg and tomato slices on Texas toast slathered with Duke’s mayo; and the Fried Chicken Sandwich, with a crispy, golden breast contrasted by the cool crunch of buttermilk iceberg slaw and pickles and topped with Duke’s mayo and Crystal hot sauce.

Vegans can tuck into the Bunk Impossible Burger, a 1/3-pound Impossible patty crowned with lettuce, pickles, onion, vegan sauce and vegan cheese. Side options include tater tots and mac and cheese, both of which can be upgraded to “loaded” status with the addition of bacon, scallions, extra cheese and sour cream.

Save room for a little something sweet at the end of your meal, as Bunk offers house-made chocolate chip cookies as well as Ruby Jewel ice cream sandwiches in fun flavors like honey lavender with lemon cookies and Oregon strawberry with brown sugar cookies.

Tucked away in the peaceful Buckman neighborhood on the city’s southeast side, Meat Cheese Bread prides itself on incorporating fresh products from local farmers and ranchers and bread made fresh daily in-house. Though the menu changes frequently based on seasonal availability of ingredients and the chef’s creative inspiration, recent cold sandwich creations have included roasted turkey with Fontina cheese, bacon, sweet onion, mayo and lettuce on rustic sourdough and the Park Kitchen (flank steak, pickled onions, greens, blue cheese and sherry vinaigrette).

Hot sandwich options rely heavily on fresh, flavorful veggies, including the Squash sandwich with roasted zucchini and yellow squash, feta, arugula, aioli and salsa verde on ciabatta and the Green Bean, with grilled green beans, bacon relish, soft-boiled egg, parmesan and aioli. Meat Cheese Bread rounds out its modest menu with a handful of sides and sweets, such as potato salad, house-made soup, bread pudding and peanut butter rice crispy treats.
