Dining out has returned for mush of the country, with new stipulations and concerns we venture out once more, tired of our own cooking in search of someone else to prepare the meal (and to do the dishes!) These last couple of years have been unusual in every aspect of our lives and it’s good to finally see shops opening up, restaurants firing up their kitchens, and old friends gathering once more at their tables. Portland is a nationwide leader in many things, but we like to think we rank at the top when it comes to hospitality.

It has been difficult to stay closed for so long, but now with things opening back up, it’s more important than ever to bring our local businesses back to life by spending out time and money with them. So with that, and the changes in mind of how much the landscape has shifted, we went out searching for the best restaurants in Portland for 2022.

Enjoying a meal with someone is so much more than filling our bellies, it has more to do with the interpersonal connections and the discussions we have over the meal. You may be looking for a great steak, or maybe tonight it’s pasta on your mind. From burgers to Curry, Portland has every dish in the world available and choosing the best restaurant in Portland is strictly a matter of taste (if you’ll pardon the pun) What appeals to one might be less attractive to another, but what never goes out of style is great food at a great restaurant.

Here we have selected a few of the best restaurants in Portland and we know you will agree with our reasons, even if your favorite isn’t on our list. We come out to eat to share a meal, break bread, make moments and memories. Allow Portland to serve you fine meals at any of these fantastic restaurants.

There is no need to adhere to a formal dress code here, but you may feel like putting on some of your finer clothes and straighten that tie, we’re not going “out to eat”, we’re going to experience dinner at one of the best restaurants in Portland. Higgins is located just north of the University district and enjoys the well deserved reputation of having excellent food, fantastic service, and a dedication to bringing fine farm to table dining showing what the Pacific Northwest has to offer. The bar is plentiful and deep, the beer selection is varied, but the real star on Higgins’ menu is the food.

If you can find a better Charcuterie service, let us know because Higgins has the best we’ve ever tasted. To be honest, the very concept of aspic was a concern for us until we tasted the moussette, a brandied duck liver with port wine aspic; just delightful! Every entree is designed around the main dish as a centerpiece in the flavor profile.

The Carnarolli Risotto was paired perfectly with mushrooms and root vegetables that brought out the delicate hints hidden in the risotto. We will return to sample the Cassoulet as it looked superb and smelled delicious from across the table, we need to try it for ourselves! Not that we require much of a reason to return, we will take any opportunity to dine again at one of the best restaurants in Portland.

9. Toki

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

Just off the main road north of Alder and south of Burnside, you’ll find the remarkably beautiful spot off 12th called “Toki” and we believe it is not only one of the finest Korean themed dining establishments we’ve been to, this is one of the best restaurants in Portland.

It’s just a small entrance in an otherwise ordinary building, but one you step over the threshold at Toki, you’ll be transported to a world where every bit of food is worthy of its own photo-shoot, and once you taste, you won’t waste any more time taking pictures, you’ll dive right in.

There is a brunch available on weekends, and dinner is served every night. The menu includes such unexpected combinations of flavors such as the kimchi pancake and the Spam hand roll. Each of them are something you have to taste to believe. The traditional steamed dumpling are among the best we’ve ever had, and that’s saying something, we love steamed dumplings.

Of course you can’t serve a Korean menu without trying the chicken wings and Toki comes strong on the wings with four fantastic flavors. The Instant Ramen Wings are something of a must-try but our favorite is the Gochujang & Tamarind Wings, a bit spicy, just like wings should be. From brunch to dinner, Toki is one of the best restaurants in Portland.

8. Navarre

Take a trip down Burnside, just before you get to Laurelhurst there is a small and unassuming spot for dinner that you’d never guess how much taste you can pack into a small space. Navarre is the kind of place that you’d imagine should be housed in its own large complex but here it is, one of the best restaurants in Portland quietly serving in your very own neighborhood.

The menu is listed as “European” but don’t let the over-use of that moniker fool you. So many places call their Mediterranean menu “European” but Navarre truly embraces the entirety of the continent serving small plate dishes from east to west, north to south. Dinner or brunch at Navarre is going to allow you to taste creations that represent a larger spectrum of culinary flavors.

German, French, Porteguese, Middle Eastern, and even some Scandinavian influences can clearly be seen on the diverse menu which changes regularly due to Navarre’s dedication to local produce and ingredients. The chefs create the menu based on what can be locally sourced and fresh as possible. And if you’re not quite fond of any particular dish, the entire table can order the “We Choose” where you pick and choose among the entire menu a-la-carte style.

7. Morchella

portland restaurants morchella

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

You’ll find one of the best restaurants in Portland as you’re coming down Fremont into Alameda. Morchella is one of those places that once you discover it, you’ll tell everyone you know about it. And when they ask what’s so special, you’ll find yourself at a loss for words and tell them, “Just grab your jacket, we’ll head over there now!” The design and idea behind Morchella is something you’ll only find in funky communities like Portland and we’re ecstatic we stumbled across their open doors.

Imagine yourself alone in the Pacific Northwest, a hunter-gatherer able to prepare meals from what you can forage and take here at home. However, you’re also a world-class chef and can turn the most mundane ingredient into culinary perfection. That is the Morchella experience. Venison so tender it will melt in your mouth, served with the tastiest weeds you’ll eat anywhere.

The menu doesn’t call out “hog weed”, it says “charred dandelion and purslane” and you will never look at what grows between the rows in your garden the same way again. Dining at one of the best restaurants in Portland will change the way you think of sustainable foods and what’s available foraging around your local trail or forest.

6. Canard

portland restaurants canard

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

The east bank of the Willamette can be a busy neighborhood, bustling with activity and commerce. We all get in a hurry to run those errands and finish the workday, however you should take the time to detour for dinner and enjoy fine dining at one of the best restaurants Portland has to offer. Even before you sit down to order the name Canard introduces your subconscious mind the idea of fine French cuisine, duck confit, and high-brow chefs.

Well we got it about half right at Canard. You will be served fine dining food, but there is no stuff atmosphere or elitist feeling about the place. In fact, the warm and welcoming staff will dissuade you of any undue worry, this place is amazing and you only need to peer at the menu to know that you are in for a treat.

Dishes as diverse as Foie Gras Dumplings, Lobster Glazed Sturgeon, to a simple Steam Burger which are slider burgers with American cheese or Mushroom Quesadilla. So, fear not, the vibe in Canard is relaxed and happy but the food is anything but lazy. At Canard you’ll get the very best of the French kitchen while maintaining the low-key style of the corner Bistro.

5. Coquine

portland restaurants coquine

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

You don’t have to stay downtown Portland to find great restaurant in town. Some of the best restaurants are scattered around our great city, searching for their own locations to serve their own style of menu. One of the best restaurants in Portland can be found all the way out by Mt. Tabor. Coquine and the chefs and staff have been nationally recognized for years, and it’s time you got over there to see and taste why.

The dining experience at Coquine is just that, an experience. When you arrive you’ll be treated to a carefully curated menu that was designed around what farm-to-table ingredients are currently available. The four course dinner menu and seven course tasting menus each have a similarly crafted vegetarian menu as well. Seatings happen twice nightly and you will be offered the supplements such as caviar service, fresh oysters, and of course paired wine bottle service.

The food is superb with dishes rotating in and out depending on the availability of the finest fresh ingredients and the chef’s choice of which delicacy to serve at the time. Dining at Coquine is more than just a restaurant serving dinner, they are serving an experience you’ll savor for some time to come.

4. Davenport

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

It would appear that a new catchy gimmick restaurant opens every day around the country, and just as many close, but what truly stands the test of time is allowing your food to speak for itself. The founders of Davenport, located off East Burnside just south of Kearns, is one of those fabulous eateries that doesn’t have to lure you in with clowns or kitsch, they simply serve the best food and allow you to enjoy it for what it is. By allowing the food so do their advertising for them, Davenport has become one of the best restaurants in Portland.

Simple doesn’t mean bland or boring, the menu at Davenport is wide and varied with trendy dishes for everyone, but there is no standing on ceremony here, the Braised Pork Shoulder is seasoned with sage and juniper and will make your mouth water. The Pate is an incredible amalgam of pork, pistachio, pickles, plums, and greens. Never before have you pondered the contents of a pate, and yet, Davenport will have you appreciating the ingredients.

Often voted the best burger in Portland, the beef options are amazing here. The burger is legendary and the steaks are served as the star of the show, no crazy glazes or marinades, just basic seasonings and properly rested beef. Davenport is allowing their food to speak for them, and the food is telling us that Davenport is the best restaurant in Portland.

3. Eem

portland restaurants eem

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

If you’re serious about locating the best restaurants in Portland, odds are strong that you will come across one of the five other locations created by these four Portland chefs that all have a hand in the burgeoning empire of good food in Portland. Ant of these other restaurants are great and we may cover them in another list, but right now let’s focus on the one that’s the most fun, “Eem Thai BBQ & Cocktails” up in the north district just on the southern edge of Humboldt.

The largest draw here is that the entire restaurant is enjoying one big smile. From staff to patrons, there is something so relaxing about Eem’s vibe that just puts everyone at ease. The cocktail menu has some fantastic mixed drinks that give a new twist to the old drinks, the Frosty Factory is open serving four flavors of booze-laden slushies, and the food is excellent. The menu is split into “Curry” and “Not Curry”.

The Smoked Pork Krapao was a surprising dish that tasted exotic and familiar at the same time. Their White Curry is brisket based and puts cauliflower to its best uses, however for us nothing beats Eem’s Massaman Curry for that Thai flavor. The best curry in Portland is served here at Eem, one of the best restaurants in Portland.

2. Lazy Susan

portland restaurants lazy susan

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

You can tell when a restaurant is a local favorite, we can’t find anyone that has anything less than stellar opinion of Lazy Susan. This unassuming building in the heart of Montavilla houses the Lazy Susan Family Charcoal Diner and this hidden gem should be showcased high and loudly as it is easily one of the best restaurants in Portland. The focus at Lazy Susan is to keep things simple. The source their foods and ingredients locally and responsibly, then they prepare these fine fresh foods for us in a tasteful and simple way that does indeed bring to mind the idea of “family”.

We have to love when a restaurant tells you right up front that their menu is not up to date and is difficult to keep current because they only serve what they can get fresh and local. The idea that they’re not going to serve us anything but the best is a great sign of their dedication. When the menu is right, make sure you try their Pork Secreto for a wonderful cut of flavorful pork and their tasty addition of New Mexico Salsa.

The turnip horseradish comes with the Grilled Steak, but you won’t need much of it because the flavors are cooked right into the beef. For the best restaurant in Portland to feel like you’re enjoying a fancy home-cooked meal beyond our ordinary culinary skills and without having to do the dishes, make certain to stop at Lazy Susan.

1. Le Pigeon

portland restaurants le pigeon

Nulla aliquet enim tortor at auctor urna nunc id. A arcu cursus vitae congue. Sed egestas egestas fringilla phasellus faucibus scelerisque. At tellus at urna condimentum mattis pellentesque.

Tincidunt augue interdum velit euismod in pellentesque massa placerat duis. Vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla.

Before you can enjoy a meal at one of the best restaurants in Portland, you should think of the dinner experience as an encounter with new people, new foods, and an event rather than a simple meal. You can get “dinner” anywhere, but you’ll only experience the finest chef’s pairings and French cuisine in Portland by having a seat at Le Pigeon. The is a small restaurant that feels like a cozy bar.

When you get indoors at Le Pigeon you’ll see that the entire restaurant is filled with patrons looking for more than a morsel to eat, we’re all here for the attraction of new foods and friends.Completely separated from their sister restaurant Canard, this intimate setting allows you to sit at the bar and watch the chefs prepare the food before your eyes. The Chef’s Tasting Menu is a delight in French dishes, our favorite being the Seared Foie Gras served with Octopus and Pork dumplings that are beyond description in taste and flavor.

If you’re looking for a steak, the Ribeye at Le Pigeon is served with a chorizo spaetzle, a flavor profile we hadn’t ever thought of before. However, no matter what you order, make sure you get a piece of their Espresso Crumb Cake for dessert. It’s flavors will wake you up and keep you going wherever the rest of the evening takes you.
